Queen Square, Bristol

Space Type
A Historic Town Square
Location
Off Princes St and The
Grove, The Old City, Bristol
Award

RTPI 2003

Originally one of England’s largest Georgian squares until a
dual carriageway was driven across it in 1936. In 1993 the
road was closed, and in 1998 the authentic and detailed
recreation of the square began, using the original designs
and layouts. Buses have been rerouted, broken pavements
made good, streets resurfaced with cobbles, boundary walls
and fences restored. The original gravel path layout and
Grade 1 listed statue of ‘William the Third’, at the square’s
centre, have all been brought back to their original splendour
