The Danish architect Jørn Utzon
won the competition for a new
opera house in Sydney in 1957
with a design reminiscent of an
arrangement of mussel shells.
Engineer Ove Arup and Peter Rice were involved in the execution of the project. Although the opera was not finished according to Utzon's original design, the project can be regarded as a triumph over practical, political and bureaucratic difficulties.
