A luminaire is a complete
system for providing the
kind of light we want,
where we want it.
The luminaire consists
of the lamp, the lamp
socket, the ballast, if
required, the reflector,
diffuser, shielding,
and the housing for all those things.
A luminaire needs only a mounting
spot and a source of electricity to produce light.
To be an efficient producer of light, a luminaire must provide
balanced, glare-free illumination. Luminaires accomplish this
through the use of reflectors, which shape the light output,
and shielding and diffusion devices that reduce glare and
distribute the light evenly.
