Urban design processes and procedures
Around the world many urban design schemes
have been brought from the glimmerof an idea
The Physical Public Realm
Does the physical public realm simply consist of all the open spaces outside the private domain of building interiors, secluded courtyards, and gardens? Is it everything that can be perceived (seen,
The public realm of cities and urban design
Almost all definitions of urban design state that it has something to do with the public realm (or the public domain or with public space) and the elements that define it. One of the best is:
The nature of urban design and urban desining
Today the term ‘urban design’ is used to describe almost any design that takes place in any city setting. ‘It seems that every person and their dog is an urban designer; it’s sexy and it’s chic’ (Tennant, 2004).

Skyline (architecture )
DEFINITIONS
Skyline is a very recent term. Until the midnineteenth
century the word skyline was a synonym for horizon,
used in travel literature in reference to the meeting of
sky and land (Attoe, 1981).
Typical dictionary definitions are ‘ the line where earth
and sky meet’, ‘the horizon’ and ‘the outline of a . . .
mountain range seen against the sky’. Use of the word

Evacuated tube collectors
The most recent form of collector is the evacuated
tube or vacuum tube system. It works by exploiting
a vacuum around the collector which reduces heat
loss from the system, making it especially suitable for
more temperate climes.
These units heat water from 60 to 80 C which is
sufficient for providing domestic hot water.

Indirect gain
In this form of design a heat absorbing element
is inserted between the incident solar radiation
and the space to be heated; thus the heat is
transferred in an indirect way.
This often consists of a wall placed behind
glazing facing towards the sun, and this thermal
storage wall controls the flow of heat into the
building.
Bioclimatic design strategies
In winter (or underheated periods), the objectives of bioclimatic design are to resist loss of heat from the building envelope and to promote gain of solar heat. In summer (or overheated periods), these objectives are the reverse, to resist solar gain and to promote loss of heat from the building interior. The strategies can be set forth as:
Principles of bioclimatic design
Bioclimatic design strategies are effective for
“envelope-dominated” structures, to provide
a large portion if not all of the energy required
to maintain comfort conditions.
“Internal load dominated” buildings— such as
hospitals, offices, commercial kitchens,
windowless stores— experience high internal
Consultation drawings
Consultation drawings could be thought of
as a special category of presentation drawings
in that they are primarily intended to convey
information from designer to client or user or
other participant in the design process.
However, these drawings are done not
so much to convince as to elicit a response
Instruction drawings
These drawings are intended as an unambiguous one-way form of communication
from designer or design team to constructor or supplier. They are usually only done after the designed object is largely resolved and they contain certain knowledge in the form of instructions for those responsible for physically creating the object.
Presentation drawings
These are the drawings through which designers
communicate their work to clients and others from
whom they may need some agreement, consent or
permission to continue.
They are characteristically intended to communicate
decisions about the design to others who may have
had no involvement at all in the design process.
Types of drawings
Even a preliminary examination of designers’ drawings will reveal that there are many different types of drawings involved. The first step in developing our understanding therefore must be to attempt some form of classification of designers’ drawings.
Design representations
So important has drawing become in the design process that virtually every contemporary design curriculum places considerable emphasis on the acquisition of skills in drawing. Schools of design will generally go to considerablelengths to teach drawing methods and develop drawing skills in their students.
Design by drawing
Originally, and still to this day in many places and
under many circumstances, designers were and are
primarily makers or crafters. They made objects
ranging from small personal and household utensils
through larger pieces of equipment used in
agriculture or otherprimitive industries, to houses and civic buildings and

The language of space
Space, and consequently that which encloses it, are much more central to all of us in our everyday lives than purely technical, aesthetic or even semiotic interpretation would suggest. Space is both that which brings
us together and simultaneously that which separates us from each other. It is thus crucial to the way our relationships work.

Foundation types (Strip footings )
Strip footings
Strip footings are commonly used for the foundations to load-bearing walls. They are also used when the pad foundations for a number of columns in line are so closely spaced that the distance between the pads is approximately
equal to the length of the side of the pads. (It is usually more economic and faster to excavate and cast concrete in one long strip, than as a series of closely spaced isolated pads.)
Pad foundations
Pad foundations
Pad foundations tend to be the simplest and cheapest
foundation type and are used when the soil is relatively
strong or when the column loads are relatively light.
They are usually square or rectangular on plan, of uniform
thickness and generally of reinforced concrete.
They can be stepped or haunched, if material
costs outweigh labour costs.
The reinforcement can vary from nothing at one extreme
through to a heavy steel grillage at the other, with lightly
reinforced sections being the most common. Typical types

A building as prominent as the one
for the new Vidhan Bhavan in Bhopal in the state of Madhya Pradesh had to take a form imbued
with an especially timeless symbolic force transcending
functional considerations. Charles Correa and his
colleagues actually won the competition in 1980, but building
did not start until 1983. After political turmoil,
